Increasing Threats To The 9/11 Truth Movement

"Those who subscribe to conspiracy theories may create serious risks, including risks of violence."
–Cass Sunstein and Adrian Vermeule, 2008, "Conspiracy Theories"

Attacks directed at the 9/11 Truth Movement are on the increase as the Movement grows globally, drawing ever more from technical, scientific, intelligence and military communities. While earlier criticism aimed only to insult and trivialize, more recent attacks have suggested stronger, even militant reaction.

Efforts to neutralize the 9/11 Truth Movement now involve describing a common "conspiratorial thinking" that essentially renders all conspiracy theories equally fallacious. By association, such a premise places one who cannot accept an official story replete with blatant lies into the company of vacuous fringe groups. A case in point is the new (2010) and widely advertised book "Voodoo Histories" in which David Aaronovitch, a "political journalist", frets about the "seditious role" conspiracies play and the"shadow armies" of the Internet that allow for "9/11 revisionism".

While Aaronovitch makes the empty claim that conspiracists are guilty of "exaggeration of the status of experts", heavoids referencing the 1200+ Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth, orthe likes ofDr. Robert Bowman, head of the "Star Wars" program under two presidents; Francesco Cossiga, former president of Italy; Dr. Alan Sabrosky, former Director of Studies at the U.S. Army War College; Andreas von Bulow, former Secretary of Germany’s Federal Defense Ministry; General Leonid Ivanshov, former Chief of Staff of Russian’s Armed Forces; Ronald D. Ray, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Reagan Administration, and hundreds more of like credibility and authority. It is simply not believable that a competent journalist dealing with this subject could be unaware of them, since their positions have been public for many years.

Likewise, law professors Cass Sunstein and Adrian Vermeule, whose article "Conspiracy Theories" centers on 9/11, intermingle 9/11 Truth with beliefs involving such as faked moon landings and global warming denials.http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1084585.
Throughout, they express such fear of the "harmful" 9/11Truth Movement that they prescribe "cognitive infiltration" by governmental agents. Because they use"theorist" and "extremist" interchangeably, it is not difficult in this era of the Patriot Act to envision scenarios in which governmental infiltration goes beyond the merely cognitive, should the Truth Movement make it necessary. Sunstein was made head the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OMB) after authoring this article and is considered a contender for the Supreme Court.

Last year, Michael Chertoff, former head of Homeland Security, charged that failure to accept the official 9/11 Commission’s narrative was akin to Holocaust denial - a serious charge although ludicrous on its facehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW4eV3LzmIw. Others have made a similar comparison, including Michael Shermer of Skeptic Magazine:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-shermer/911-truthers-a-pack-of-li_b_84154.html.

Regarding Skeptic, for a lengthy butunconvincing defense of the governmental story re 9/11, consider this 2006 article at eSkeptic by Phil Molehttp://www.skeptic.com/eskeptic/06-09-11. One has to wonder why an account by the 9/11 Commission, admittedly "set up to fail", a story so full of holes and physical impossibilities that it cries out for a skeptical assessment , is not merely immune to skepticism by self-proclaimed "skeptics" but aggressively defended by them. Yes, it does make one wonder.

In March, the Washington Post, exposing itself in a way it may come to regret, published a venomous editorial attacking a prominent Japanese politician as "susceptible to the imaginings of the lunatic fringe" for his opinions regarding 9/11.While the editorial depicted the man’s views as a threat to U.S.-Japanese relations, his views simply mirror those of the global Truth Movement, about which the Post is certainly aware, so that the editorial became a de facto attack on the entire Movement as"reckless and fact-averse … too bizarre, half-baked and intellectually bogus to merit serious discussion."

Evidence that three buildings came down via internal demolition is simply overwhelming, and by any reasonable standard this cries out for investigation. For the likes of Sunstein, Aaronovitch, Chertoff, Shermer et al. to so aggressively attack what is a global effort for truth puts them way, way beyond mere believers of a discredited governmental story. And this is very interesting, for when an influential cadre of lawyers, journalists and bureaucrats take such pains at organized attack of such a Movement, it makes them a major bulwark in a monstrous fiction. Why such concern on their part if the Truth Movement is, as it was depicted early on, so silly as to warrant "troofer" ridicule? In fact, their efforts indicate considerable apprehension (itself a validation of the Truth Movement) within certain interests. What interests, exactly, are they? What do these people have in common that is not clear to the larger public? One wonders.

A glaring aspect of these attacks is the apparent refusal of attackers to engage technical experts of the 9/11 Truth Movement in civil debate. So far, face-to-face exchanges of evidence, on camera and for the record, have not taken place as certainly they should have. Sunstein and Vermeule maintain that the claims of the 9/11 Truth Movement are easily refuted. Likewise "skeptic" Shermer. Fine, let them present their evidence, and let Richard Gage and his colleagues present theirs, so that the evidence of each side can be compared in full light.

The IRD’s Attack on My ”Silly” 9/11 Theories

The IRD’s Attack on My ”Silly” 9/11 Theories
David Ray Griffin April 20, 2010 911Truth.org A right-wing neocon organization called the Institute on Religion and Democracy (IRD)1 — which devotes itself to attacking religiously and socially progressive churches while supporting US imperial policies (going back to the Nicaraguan Contras funded illegally by the Reagan administration2 ) — has recently put out a press release attacking my next book, which is scheduled to be published this coming fall. Saying that I am “back with another outrageous book” in which I allege “new absurdities,” the IRD claims that I am “this time alleging that the Obama administration is attempting to undermine 9/11 conspiracy theorists.”3 False Assumptions about My Forthcoming Book However, if members of the IRD staff could have waited until my book had been published, so they could have read it before attacking it, they could have seen that it does no such thing. They could have seen that it simply deals with an article, entitled “Conspiracy Theories,” co-authored in 2008 by Cass Sunstein and another professor at Harvard Law School.4 Using the “9/11 conspiracy theory” as their primary example of conspiracy theories, Sunstein and his co-author argued that the government should try to undermine it and that the best way to do this would be through a method they called “cognitive infiltration.” In 2009, President Obama appointed Sunstein as the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.5 My forthcoming book is entitled Cognitive Infiltration: An Obama Appointee’s Plan to Undermine the 9/11 Conspiracy Theory. Neither the title nor the book itself suggests that Obama will have Sunstein actually carry out this plan. The IRD’s premature criticism of my book is also wrong on another point. By speaking of what I will be “alleging,” the IRD was supporting its press release’s title, “9/11 Conspiracy Theorist Dreaming Up New Absurdities.” The IRD’s suggestion, in other words, is that I simply “dreamed up” the “absurdity” that someone connected to the Obama administration had a proposal for undermining 9/11 conspiracy theorists. However, the proposal made by Sunstein has been extensively discussed on the Internet.6 With a little research, therefore, the IRD could have learned that I had not simply made something up.

N.Y. trial not off the table for top 9/11 suspect, Holder tells Senate panel

By William Branigin
Washington Post / April 15, 2010

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2010/04/15/ny_tria…

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Eric H. Holder said yesterday that the Obama administration has not ruled out holding a trial in New York City for the suspects in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Holder came under fire from Republicans on the panel over the administration’s handling of terrorism cases, including plans to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and try terrorist suspects in civilian courts.

Holder told the committee that, despite widespread objections, “New York is not off the table’’ as a venue for the trial of Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the avowed mastermind of the attacks, and four alleged coconspirators.
<!–break–>

In response, Representative Peter King of New York, the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, called on President Obama to exclude definitively New York City as a potential site for the trial and to remove Holder from the decision-making process in selecting a venue.

“I am shocked and appalled that Attorney General Holder is still considering New York City as the venue,’’ King said in a statement. “These terrorists should be tried in a military commission outside New York City.’’

Holder said in November that the government planned to try the five in federal court near the site of the World Trade Center towers. But the administration has reconsidered the venue in the face of mounting public criticism, objections from Republicans, and misgivings by key officials, including Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York, and Senator Charles Schumer of New York, a Democrat.

The White House now is considering a plan to let a military commission try the Sept. 11 suspects, reverting to a solution first advanced by the Bush administration.

In his testimony, Holder argued strongly against banning trials for terrorist suspects in federal criminal court, as advocated by some critics. Such a prohibition, he said, would seriously weaken national security.

He said the administration has established a presumption that civilian courts would take preference over military tribunals for terrorist trials but that it was a rebuttable presumption. He urged flexibility and pragmatism in deciding where to hold the trials.

On 12 December 2009 a group of activists met at Martin Place in Sydney to challenge the irrational, unscientific and anti-democratic agenda of the Walk Against Warming protest march.

On tonight’s show we speak with two of those activists: Bill Koutalianos - a member of the Climate Sceptics Party, and Phil Davis of Truth Movement Australia.

During the show we cover some highlights from the day and discuss strategies for activism, with the aim of improving the way in which we communicate about the problems associated with climate science and social policy.

We also have some video (below) from the protest. The debate with the physicist has provoked some criticism which I believe is justified - this could could have been handled better!

CIT reconstruction of AL77 approach.

Today it is my pleasure to talk to Craig Ranke of the Citizen Investigation Team, a two man operation which has been investigating the Pentagon attack for several years now. Their latest production is a film titled “National Security Alert“.

The central thesis of the film is that the flight path of the plane believed to have struck the Pentagon was to the north of the Citgo gas station, making it impossible for the plane to have downed several light poles as claimed in the official report. The film further asserts that the plane executed a flyover which was synchronised with an explosion within the building.

Craig’s work has sparked considerable division and acrimony in the 9/11 research community and accusations of deliberate disinformation have been levelled. We present some critical analysis below:

I should emphasise that TNRA does not offer this interview as an endorsement of either side in this debate. Clearly there is a controversy and our job is to try to give both sides of the argument a decent hearing.

I look forward to your comments and criticism.

“We shall pick up an existence by its frogs. Wise men have tried other ways. They have tried to understand our state of being, by grasping at its stars, or its arts, or its economics. But, if there is an underlying oneness of all things, it does not matter where we begin, whether with stars, or laws of supply and demand, or frogs, or Napoleon Bonaparte. One measures a circle, beginning anywhere.” ~Charles Fort, Lo!

UFOlogists don’t like to talk about bigfoot. Cryptozoologists looking for sasquatch don’t like talking about ghosts. Ghost hunters won’t talk about UFOs. And conspiracy researchers are constantly lamenting, and rightfully so, being linked to all of the above by the media as a discrediting tactic. It’s a fair criticism (for those not wishing to taint there own activist chocolate with those other fringers’ peanut butter.)

A corollary criticism often follows that television shows and movies with wacky paranormal conspiracy subjects generally condition the public to associate those topics and issues with so much silly entertainment. And again, I generally agree with that sentiment.

But some TV shows and movies can make excellent touchstones for educating that same neophyte public about both the paranormal and parapolitical. And while our myth-making media do condition the public to pigeon-hole conspiracy claims and UFO sightings research into the molds sculpted in the image of X-Files “True Believers,” some examples from these pop-culture continuums can be turned back on themselves as vast repositories of referential material and launchpads for further exploration. These exemplary cult-classics can serve to educate instead of obfuscate. For there are many True Believers and they each have their own cliques, but there are also those watching all the various cliques - and those watchers aren’t all working for the NSA.
